When we first met

When we met for the first time five years ago, Pranjal didn’t even say hi to me. It wasn’t until a year later that we met again in Atlantic City with friends and our love story began. I still remember what I was wearing to this day: Black leggings, black top, purple blazer and brand new white heels that Pranjal fell head over heels for! (That is why we included the heels in our engagement shoot). After that, he would always flirt with me but I was in denial. After few months of courtships I caved in to his sweet antics and rest is history.

First time I said I love you

Cold Stone Creamery has a signature ice cream that is called “the pie who loved me.” (my nickname is pi). The first time I ever told Pranjal I loved him, I had a very long rough day. I took my anatomy and physiology exam that morning and was on my way back from NYC where I had taken one of my friends and her husband around for their pre-wedding photo shoot. It was a very hot day, I was frustrated with the way the day went, and I realized that all I wanted to do is see Pranjal, even if it was for a few minutes. My house is about 45 mins from NYC and he is about an hour.

I had been thinking about how I would say those 3 very important words to him and I knew that no matter when or where I said it, I had to get him that ice cream. I called Pranjal on my way and told him that I needed to see him. We decided to meet up at the mall that’s between our houses where luckily there was a Cold Stone Creamery. I took him to the store, asked him what he wanted, told him he couldn’t have it, because I wanted “The Pie Who Loved Me.” We sat in the car and before we took our first bite I asked him if he new why I wanted to get this specific ice cream, and that was when I told him.

The Proposal

Trying to keep things a secret from Payal is hard to begin, with let alone planning a proposal. It took about three months to plan and involved many of our friends and family. I had to ensure that none of them slipped up through out the process.

One of the most important things in a proposal is the place where it is going to take place. After thinking of many ideas with my “proposal production crew” I narrowed it down to Hedden Park. This place had a special place in my heart as this was our go to spot when we just needed some alone time or wanted a nice quiet place where we could sit by the waterfall and talk about our future. Payal had her sights set on the perfect proposal happening on a glacier in New Zealand but this was the closest I could find.

Now that I had the proposal spot down, I was able to begin planning. I had a crew of about 15 people. This included a cameraman, decoys, singers and band members. After successfully scouting the place for about three weekend the day was here to put all the planning and hard work of my crew to work. I had created a WhatsApp group about a month before with Meetal (Payal’s sister) and Payal to make plans to go hiking. Of course, I had spoken to Meetal about it beforehand and she was in on the plan. We started dropping hints on where we want to go for hiking and what not.

The BIG day was here! As planned I got to Payal’s house on a surprisingly warm March Saturday morning. Everything was going smoothly and suddenly my proposal crew WhatsApp group started buzzing like a bee’s nest. Curiosity kicked in and I opened the group chat. “THE PARK IS CLOSED” Read the first message. My heart started pounding, palms getting sweaty and I became extremely nervous thinking that all the hard work and planning is about to go to waste. All kinds of negative thoughts started running through my mind- What if the part doesn’t open given it was a Saturday. Oh gosh, I would have to call all the people who couldn’t make it to the proposal and tell them not to call or text her. I had given them a specific time to send in their congratulations but given the park was not open the timeline was going to be most certainly delayed. Meetal was sitting directly across me from the dining table while Payal sitting next to me I subtly tried to mouth the following words: “The Park is closed.” Her eyes lit up in shock and my face dropped in disappointment. I calmly got up from the dining table and went to the bathroom to make a phone call to one of my crew members. Refusing to believe that the park is closed I started yelling and freaking out on the phone call. I told the guys that this is not the time to play a prank on me; it’s one of my biggest days of my life. I told them that we are leaving soon and with the park being in the same town Payal lives in, it wouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to get there.

As we got in the car and started driving, to my relief, I got a text saying the park is open! I was relieved and now ever so focused on how I was going to execute the proposal given this major hiccup was behind us.

Once we got to the park the place looked calm and quiet with birds chirping. As we started to make our way through the park and to the proposal spot, Meetal excused herself saying she had a “phone call to make.” As per the plan, she went back to the car and we started our trek to the “Glacier.” We sat down and got comfortable. I looked around to make sure everyone was in place and then began my speech. I got on my knee and asked her to marry me. She was shocked and shaking while we were at the edge of a 10 feet waterfall. She said yes! My crew came out of hiding and we smiled for the camera. I had one more surprise for her waiting back at a gazebo in the park. All her friends from local and out of state had come to join us for this moment and I had organized couple of my friends to play her favorite song that she has always considered our song.

We hope you enjoy looking at these photos as much as we enjoyed while capturing them.

Congratulations, Payal & Pranjal!

Love, Chirali & Amish Thakkar
