Joota Chori - Joota Chhupai

Joota Chori - Joota Chhupai- Indian Wedding Tradition - Explained through hindu culture and our wedding photography

Joota Chori or Joota Chupai is extremely popular fun indian wedding tradition. The bride and the groom are initially asked to remove their shoes before the wedding ceremony takes place.  At this time, while groom entered the wedding mandap, bride’s sister steals the shoes and asks for gift in return during the wedding vidai ceremony when bride and groom leave.

Joota Chori or Joota Chupai is extremely popular fun indian wedding tradition. It is associated with hiding groom’s shoes. The bride and the groom are initially asked to remove their shoes before the wedding ceremony takes place.

At this time, while groom entered the wedding mandap, bride’s sister and bride’s friends smartly follow the groom’s friends as they are the one hiding the shoes. Once the bride side figure out where are the shoes, they smartly steal the shoes.

At the end of the wedding, when it is time for Vidai ceremony, groom looks to find his shoes and Bride’s sister reveals that she has them and asks for a gift in order to return the shoes to the groom.

Joota chori and Joota chhupai is not based on hindu cultural wedding traditon, but  The inception or the actual origin of this fun-filled tradition is not exactly known, but it has been prevalent for centuries in the larger realm of Indian customs and wedding traditions.

Bride’s sister and her friends get the gift in form of cash or some sort of valuable gifts from Groom and his family.   Lots of singing, dancing, and merrymaking takes place during the joota chori – joota chhupai tradition.

The groom’s brothers and cousins, on the other hand, try their best to find the shoes in order to avoid the fee, but in most cases fail since the bride’s sisters are often too smart and clever when it comes to the lively ritual of the ‘Joota chori rasam’. When the groom finally gives up on all his light-hearted negotiations and gives into the demands of the bride’s sisters, he finally gets his shoes back which are put on his feet by the bride’s sisters. In some or most cases, the bride’s sisters only steal one shoe and not the entire pair since that gives a more comic effect to the situation.

The Groom’s Shoes are generally designed to match with what he is wearing. Groom’s Sherwani or wedding suite is always custom-made matching to indian bride outfit and they both go for designer indian wedding outfit custom made by top famous designers.
